Although there are numerous paths up Mt. Rinjani and more than 20 communities surrounding it, the primary entrances are from Senaru in the north and Sembalun Lawang in the east. The park’s forest is home to a variety of beautiful birds. The crested cockatoo, which can only be found in the park and nowhere else west of Lombok, is arguably its most well-known symbol. The wild fig tree or beringin serves as a source of food and shelter for several forest dwellers, including insects, birds, civets, and monkeys.
Orchids, or anggrek, are also common in the grassland sections, as is edelweiss, or bunga abadi, which grows beyond the tree line and is a magnificent icon of the park and one of our best-known sub-alvine species.
The following are excerpts from a brochure for village guides providing a compilation of traditional stories passed down through centuries by the inhabitants of Dusun Senaru.
